wedding rings?

when i buy engagment ring, am i suppose to buy her with a diamond or it doesn’t have to be a diamond. Can i get her and I a wedding band w/out the diamond and when we get married then i give her a ring with a diamond? COuld you explain this process to me pease. And should i look for a wedding band with her or should i suprise her..
